Bonnie Schneider
Partly due to my graduation from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University 1970-75) and observed the liberal arts programs from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) and believe that it is important to integrate education and the study of art into other disciplines. It's not surprising that an ethnomusicologist holding a PhD and MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. The ethnomusicology course I began here in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) can be found in the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It is possible to pursue many interests is something I really appreciate. I very much enjoy teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors), and for which I've composed three texts namely Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. There are times when I am pursuing primarily academic activities along with times when I incorporate administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of the Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group in Asian Studies in 1999 and currently Chair of the Department of Music again).
